It's summer, and July, so this probably won't surprise you, but it's national hot dog month.

To celebrate, the Rock Island Public Library held a  'Dog Days of Summer' event.

It encourages children to 'paws' to read while participating in a summer reading program.

Kids took part in a balloon rocket race, bean bag toss and arts and crafts.

Organizers say events like this give children a chance to learn and have fun.

"All of the activities we've been doing all summer, our read with the dog event, are all aimed at getting kids into the library, reading books and doing quality activities together," said Lisa Lockheart with the Rock Island Public Library

Organizers say this is their first 'Dog Days' celebration.
