It's a tribute to our service member that honors them for their service. The Freedom 5k Run is Thursday in East Moline. It's $35 to register and all proceeds will benefit the local USO/AUSA emergency relief program.

Runners from all over the Quad Cities takes part in what Joe Moreno calls a tradition  for a good cause.

"There's all too often military families that are in need of financial support or other types of support that the military cant provide," said Freedom Run director, Joe Moreno.

But this race aims to change that one runner at a time.

"We work hand in hand. They do their job serving our country and we do our job, raising awareness and money for them," said Moreno. "The more people we get involved, the more money we can raise and the more families we can support."

Last year the race raised $8000 and organizers are hoping to raise more than that this year. That support is something Alison Ruble with USO of Illinois says is needed in this area because the USO relies on donations to function.

"We're talking emergency need. So from time to time, expenses come up. We had one situation where a service member had loss their job and their car broke down and they didn't have the funding to fix it," Alison Ruble with USO of Illinois said.

The money raised last year helped ten families. There will be a moment of silence with taps performed in honor of those fallen solders before the race .
