Families all over the area are getting ready to head back to school. It can be stressful time for families and teachers and hat's definitely the case at one North Scott elementary school. Faculty were scrambling to be ready for students because of a construction project happening there right now. But a few helpers came to class to make it all happen.

Students filed in at Edward White Elementary School in Eldridge Tuesday to unpack their backpacks ahead of the semester starting on Wednesday. The classrooms were mostly set, but that was not the case just a few hours before.

"Everything was pretty much in the middle of the classroom this morning when I got here," said kindergarten teacher Apryl Andersen.

Out in the hallway it's a work zone. An expansion that nearly doubles the current school is still underway and is not scheduled to be done until December. The work on one section kept some teachers out of their classroom right down to the wire. But then came some helping hands.

"Members of the girls basketball teams, about half dozen PTA parents and number of our teachers who are veterans were involved with all this chaos down here," said Principal John Langenhan.

Parent Sarah Hansel was among those volunteering to help.

"Just getting books on the shelf, wiping down new counters, tables, getting chairs set up, things on the wall," said Hansel.

It was a tough test to complete in time if not for a lot of teamwork and a group effort coming from a tight knit community. The expansion at Edward White Elementary School includes a new gym, classrooms, and offices. There's also a big renovation project getting underway at North Scott High School.
