House Fire In Andalusia

Posted: Updated:

A house in Andalusia is heavily damaged from a fire. It occurred at the 800 block of 5th Avenue West.

When fire crews arrived flames were shooting from the roof.

The Chief says the deck collapsed on a gas meter so there was a live gas line flowing and they couldn't go in for their attack until the utility company shut it off. Also, crews used about five tankers to truck in water instead of drawing hoses from a couple of nearby hydrants. The chief says the water flow in this part of town is iffy, plus they were concerned about using up the manpower.

"Could have dropped a line and ran it," Andalusia Fire Chief Gary Bower said. "When the guys came we needed manpower so instead of dragging hoses, it takes one guy to drive a truck, 4 or 5 guys to drag hoses"

"Flames were shooting from out the roof 15-20 feet and from the roof part a lot of smoke," neighbor Bill Adkins said.

Chief Bower says the top level of the home are total loss. One person was home at the time this got started but got out okay. A cause is still being investigated.
