More than 2,600 volunteers will be giving their time at parks, schools and other nonprofit organizations throughout the Quad Cities Wednesday. The effort is part of the United Way Day of Caring.

It's the United Way of the Quad Cities Area's 10th annual Day of Caring and the event has been growing since it began. More than 600 people will get involved in it this year than they did in 2013.

"I think it demonstrates the generosity of the Quad cities both financially and the willingness to give their time and make a difference,” said United Way of the Quad Cities President Scott Crane on the growth of the program.

Crane was at the kickoff breakfast Wednesday morning along with about 600 volunteers who were getting ready for the day ahead of them. They'll go to nearly 200 different sites and tackle projects from painting a homeless shelter, to cleaning up a playground, to reading to children.

United Way of the Quad Cities COO Jerry Jones said volunteers are the organization's vital resource and said the United Way needs volunteers throughout the year.
