The stifling heat forced more than a dozen area school districts to let out early Friday where temperatures in some classrooms soared up near 90 degrees.

“It's really hot and muggy in here because we don't have school air conditioning,” said Kathryn Hartog, a 5th grader at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School in Davenport.

St. Paul school let students out early at 12:30 p.m. In all, 13 school districts had early dismissal according to KWQC.com.

“It's really humid and the floors are really sticky in the hallways,” said Clarissa Balk, a St. Paul 5th grader.

In classrooms, water bottles accompanied workbooks while fans were set on high. Windows were left open and lights were turned off to keep extra heat at a minimum.

“We have a lot of fans in here. That keeps it cool but it's still pretty hot,” said 5th grader, Morgan Jennings.

“We have to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated,” said Hartog.

St. Paul's principal, Julie Delaney, says the school was built in 1926 and does not have an electrical system capable of handling an expensive air-conditioner upgrade.

“It's oppressive. What the teachers keep saying is the air is heavy, it's just really heavy, hard to breathe,” said Delaney. “They're hot. They're tired. So, with the little bitty ones, it's hard to watch them suffer through it. We're making sure they're getting hydrated. We're trying to keep them cool but a lot of it is they can't learn when it's this hot.”
