Tonight parents in the Rock Iland Shool Dstrict will find out if their child's school could be closing at the end of the year. There have been months of meetings, presentations and public comment. But now Superintendent Rck Loy says he's ready to move forward with a final recommendation.

Right now the superintendent will not say what exactly will happen at tonight's meeting or which schools will be impacted. But last night he did lay out what his recommendation will accomplish. First of all he says the number of mid-sized elementary schools in the district will be reduced from 11 down to 9. That number could include a newly built choice elementary school or simply 9 current buildings. Back in July district leaders announced they would not close more than two schools.

The reason for all of this is declining enrollment. District leaders say studies have shown that the district has too many buildings for its size. And they say for both financial and academic reasons restructuring their buildings just became necessary.

While we don't know yet which schools will close parents who have children in some of the smaller or older school buildings have been very vocal over the past few months to try and save their schools.

One of the schools where parents are worried is Audubon Elementary. We caught up with a couple of parents to get their thoughts on tonight's announcement.

Parent Laura Spidle, "Audubon is on 18th Avenue, turning into more of a business district with a bigger Hy-Vee coming and all the stores coming so I have thought they might do something with that."

Parent Barry Eckerman, "I think it would be a poor choice of schools to close, I don't think the school is that inefficient class wise and I think the general school is in good shape and this is a 3rd generation child going to this school and I think it would be a tragic loss to the neighborhood and basically to the Rock Island area."

As we mentioned the district will reveal what it plans to do tonight. The school board meeting is at 6:30pm in the Rock Island High School Library. Of course we'll bring you full coverage of that meeting tonight in the News at 10:00pm.
