Toddler Hurt In Iowa City Plane Crash Dies

Updated:

The 2-year old girl who was hurt in a plane crash in Iowa City has now died. Family members say little Sydney Blanton died at the hospital. She would have turned three this July.

The plane went down shortly after takeoff, just after ten Tuesday morning. A witness said the plane turned sideways, crashed and then landed in a ditch north of Iowa Highway 1 on the southwest edge of Iowa City . The propeller was in the ditch and it appears its wing hit a utility pole. The cabin of the single-engine plane was in a dentist's office parking lot.

The flight was arranged by Angel Flight Central Inc., a Missouri-based organization that provides free flights for individuals in need of health care. The toddler had just undergone medical treatment in Iowa City.

Witnesses say the child's mother, Christina Blanton, and the pilot, Lewis Martin, walked away from the crash but did have injuries.

There's no word yet on what caused the crash, but the National Weather Service was reporting heavy rain and thunder around the time of the crash.
