SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KWQC) - The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 14,612 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in Illinois on Thursday, including 168 additional deaths.

During Governor J.B. Pritzker’s COVID-19 press briefing Thursday (watch below), he reminded residents that Tier 3 mitigations will go into effect statewide on Friday. As part of that, he urged people to stay home as much as possible except for essential activities like shopping for groceries, going to work or school, or visiting the doctor. This includes Thanksgiving plans.

Pritzker discouraged folks from attending dinners, events, gatherings, or meetings with people beyond their own household. Illinois Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike supported the message by adding, “My fear is that the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths will spike even further in the weeks after Thanksgiving, because people spent that holiday together mixing households.”

The governor announced the state is releasing $60 million in funding for community groups interested in serving as a network of “pandemic health navigators” to help people exposed to or infected with COVID. Services and resources such as meals, medicine, transportation, public benefits assistance, and mental health services would be delivered by these groups.

Community groups all over the state are eligible to participate, except for those in Chicago and Cook County, because federal funding for similar services are available in the Chicagoland area.

Any interested community groups can apply on the Illinois Department of Public Health website at dph.illinois.gov/healthnavigator.
