Cyclones win the Fiesta Bowl
GLENDALE, Ari. (KWQC) - The year 2020 will be remembered for a lot of things that people would soon forget, but for the Iowa State Cyclones football team, the year has been amazing. Iowa State played one of the greatest seasons in program history, and they kept the momentum rolling into the new year with a 34-17 victory in the Fiesta Bowl over the Oregon Ducks.
Iowa State would take the lead midway in the first half when Breece Hall capped off a 15 play drive, punching it into the end zone from a yard out to give Cyclone nation a 7-0 lead. Three minutes later, the Oregon Ducks would tie the game at 7-7 behind a 6-yard Anthony Brown run.
In the second quarter, Iowa State would take control of the game. They Cyclones would grab the lead back early in the quarter when Brock Purdy found Charlie Kolar wide open for the 14-yard score and a 14-7 lead. After the Ducks would tie it up on another Brown running score with 3:17 left before the half, the flood gates would open for Iowa State. Purdy would use his legs on a 1-yard touchdown run with under 2-minutes left in the half. Iowa State’s, Drake Nettles puts the kick where Oregon can’t grab it, the Cyclones jump on it to get the ball back to the offense. Three plays and 17-seconds later, Hall would score his second 1-yard touchdown in the half.
Iowa State would add a couple of Conner Assalley field goals in the 2nd half to secure the 34-17 win over the PAC-12′s Oregon Ducks. Hall finished with 136 yards rushing for the Cyclones and Purdy added 156 in the air.
The Fiesta Bowl championship is the Cyclones first bowl win since 2017.
