HANCOCK Co., Ill. (KWQC) -The Illinois Department of Transportation announced several closures of the Fort Madison Bridge on Illinois Rt. 9 over the Mississippi River at Niota.

The closures will occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 4, from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9 and from 5:30 a.m. to noon on March 16 and 17. The closures are necessary to make structural repairs to the bridge. A detour will be posted.

No traffic will be permitted to cross the bridge, which connects Niota, Illinois with Fort Madison, Iowa, during the scheduled repairs, and drivers should stay alert for workers and allow for extra travel time.

Over the next six years, IDOT plans to improve more than 3,300 miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of the bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program. That includes 128 bridges and 228 additional safety improvements.
