Judge denies pretrial release request from woman charged in fatal I-74 Bridge pedestrian path crash
ROCK ISLAND Co., Ill. (KWQC) - A judge on Tuesday denied a request for pretrial release for a woman accused of killing two men when police say she drove onto the I-74 bridge pedestrian path in May 2022.
Judge Frank Fuhr ruled Chhabria Harris would remain in the Rock Island County Jail without bond, online court records show. She will be back in court Nov. 8.
Harris, 47, is charged with two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, one count of aggravated DUI causing death or greater bodily harm, three counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, three counts of aggravated reckless driving, and two counts of reckless homicide.
Police and prosecutors say she was drunk when she struck three men walking over the bridge around 2 a.m. on May 22, 2022. Two of the men, Ethan Lee Gonzalez, 21, and Anthony M. Castaneda, 18, both of Moline, died, while the third man was injured.
Her Cadillac Escalade was later found in East Moline with signs of damage.
Harris also faces an aggravated battery charge from her time at the jail, court records show.
Families of the victims have filed separate wrongful death lawsuits.
