Crews find body of Rockford-area man who fell into the Mississippi River near Lock and Dam 14

HAMPTON, Ill. (KWQC) - UPDATE 9:29 p.m. Hampton Fire and Rescue says the body of a missing man who fell into the Mississippi River on Saturday has been found.

Tuesday afternoon around 1:50 p.m., crews from Hampton Fire, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Christian Aid Ministries were continuing their ongoing search efforts for the missing man.

They were able to locate and recover the man's body, who has since been identified as 35-year-old David Mitchell from Rockford, Ill.

The family has been notified.

UPDATE 1:53 p.m: According to the Hampton Fire Department and Illinois DNR, the missing man is from the Rockford, Illinois area.

Crews on scene tell TV6 divers are in the water on Sunday. Crews say they are now discussing the next steps for continuing the search this week.

According to officials, the man slipped and fell in the river on Saturday.
Someone there did attempt to rescue the man.

UPDATE: A search is underway for a man who fell in the Mississippi River.

TV6 was told the man fell in the River near Lock and Dam 14, located on the Mississippi River near LeClaire, Iowa and Hampton, Illinois.

The call came in around 4:30 Saturday afternoon. A 35-year-old male fell into the water where we were told he was with his family at the popular fishing spot in Hampton, "Fisherman's Corner" where witnesses say he fell off the rocks, and into the river.

"We feel bad about what happened here. We were fishing and all of a sudden the person fell in the water. We saw him going and another person tried to save him, but at that point, there was nothing he could do" said Andres Fernandez who witnessed the incident while fishing.

Silvis, Hampton, and East Moline fire responded to the incident. Multiple boats and a dive team were deployed in search of the man.

Officials say they will stop the search Saturday night and will continue looking for the man Sunday morning, once it is daylight again.

The man's name has not yet been released.
