Florida principal out on bond after police say he stole $900 from student

PASCO Co., Fl (NBC) - A Pasco County Elementary school principal is out of jail on bond accused of stealing from a 9-year-old special needs student.

Edward Abernathy is the principal at Connerton Elementary in Land O' Lakes.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, the student brought $2,100 of his parents' money to school.

When teachers realized it, they took the money, counted it and took it to the principal's office.

When the mother came to pick it up, according to deputies, Abernathy only turned over $1,200.

Investigators found the principal kept the $900 difference.

Abernathy has been placed on administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation.
