Multiple agencies respond to explosion at Guardian Glass Plant in DeWitt - UPDATED

DeWitt, Iowa (KWQC) UPDATE: In a statement released from Guardian Glass on Sunday morning, officials say all five employees who required medical attention were released from care the previous night without serious injury.

Officials say the incident involved natural gas, however, it is still under investigation and workers are assessing the extent of the damage to the building. Emergency crews were on-site throughout the evening on Saturday.

Guardian Glass officials are asking that employees do not come into work until they ensure the plant is safe for operations.

UPDATE: A spokeswomen for the Guardian Glass Plant says multiple people have been taken to the hospital with injuries. She did not give their condition, or say how many were injured.

Remaining employees were sent home, only emergency personnel are at the plant working.

The explosion happened near the furnace area on the east end of the building but officials wouldn't say what the cause of the explosion was.

Several crews from different towns responded, but officials didn't have an estimate on how many or who was on scene.

Guardian Glass is one of the largest employers in the DeWitt area, employing around 300 people.

ORIGINAL STORY: Clinton County Sheriff's Deputies confirm an explosion happened at the Guardian Glass Plant in DeWitt.

It happened just before 7 p.m.

No word on a number of injuries at the plant, or what caused the explosion.

A Genesis Spokesperson says five people were taken to Genesis Medical Center in DeWitt.
