MILAN, Ill (KWQC)- One man was cited for shooting two trumpeter swans out of a public blind in the Milan Bottoms Preserve Friday Morning.

Illinois DNR Officers say they received complaints and were patrolling the area.

41-year-old Drue Kampmann of Andalusia received two citations and two warnings for shooting the swans.

He received a mandatory civil penalty of $250 and will have to appear in court.

One trumpeter swan died, the other was taken to a rehab facility.

Kampmann called TV-6 late Friday afternoon. He said it was "purely a mistake" and did not shoot the swans on purpose.

He says he mistook them for geese and then called DNR once he realized they were swans.
