UPDATE: Officials identify 16-year-old student who died in Sterling

STERLING, Ill. (KWQC) - UPDATE 11/6: According to the Whiteside County Coroner, 16-year-old Dominic Franklin passed away on Sunday at a local hospital.

The coroner tells TV6 the preliminary cause of death appears to be heart failure, with no signs of outside influences.

According to the coroner, Dominic's family was not aware of any underlying heart conditions.

TV6 previously reported the Sterling Police Department said a student had died after an open gym session on Sunday.

ORIGINAL 11/5: The Sterling, Ill. Police Department says a Sterling High School student died during an open gym session Sunday.

The student, who has not been identified, collapsed Sunday. His name has not been released.

In a tweet late Monday, Rock Island Rocks Basketball expressed condolences to the district and the staff saying its "thought, prayers and condolences go out to Sterling Basketball."

The Police Department said it is not investigating the death. A cause of death has not been confirmed.
