UPDATE: One dead after crash on I-80 near Geneseo

HENRY COUNTY, Iowa (KWQC) - UPDATE: One person is dead after a crash on I-80 near Geneseo Friday afternoon.

Illinois State Police say traffic slowed to a crash prior to this crash around 1:50 p.m.

Authorities say a Dodge pickup and a semi trailer were traveling in the right lane approaching the original crash. The semi slowed and that's when the pickup hit the back of the semi, entrapping the driver and passenger of the pickup.

Both the driver and passenger of the pickup were extracted from the pickup. The passenger was then taken to Illini Hospital. The driver was taken by helicopter to Trinity Hospital in Rock Island and was pronounced dead shortly after they arrived.

Authorities are not releasing any names at this time.

All lanes of traffic reopened at 5:30 p.m.

The highway is back open but traffic is still congested on Interstate 80 after an accident Friday forced Illinois State Police to shut down all four lanes.

The crash happened at mile marker 13 a couple of miles east of Geneseo. According to ISP, a semi driver slowed down because of traffic when the driver of a pickup struck the back of the semi, trapping the pickup driver and a passenger.

A MedForce helicopter was called in and took the driver to a hospital in Rock Island. The passenger was taken to a hospital in Silvis by ambulance.

The circumstances of the crash are still being investigated.

Troopers say all eastbound lanes reopened and one westbound lane is open.
