Police release new details after two are found dead with gunshot wounds in Sterling

STERLING, Ill. (KWQC) - UPDATE 11-5-19: . Police say preliminary investigation results indicate Duane Briggs shot Brittney Long and then shot himself. The incident remains under investigation.

Two people are dead after a shooting in Sterling, Illinois. Officials with the Sterling Police department say on Sunday, just before 6:45 p.m., they were called for a welfare check on 24-year-old Brittney L. Long. (KWQC)

Officials with the Sterling Police department say on Sunday, just before 6:45 p.m., they were called for a welfare check on 24-year-old Brittney L. Long.

Officers were called after family members were concerned that she had not shown up to a family event and had not returned their phone calls.

Upon entering the home, police say they discovered Long's body along with her former boyfriend, 24-year-old Duane J. Briggs, of Freeport.

Preliminary investigation shows they both died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Investigators did recover a gun at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation and the Sterling Police Department would like to reassure the public that the incident appears to be isolated and there is no imminent threat to the public.

The Sterling Police Department was assisted by the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services and the Whiteside County Coroner's Office.
