15-year-old expelled after lunchroom assault at Davenport West High School
The Davenport School Board has voted to expel a student accused of assaulting another student.
The altercation happened in the lunchroom at Davenport West High School earlier this month, sending the victim to the hospital with serious head injuries.
A 15-year-old student faces several charges, including willful injury, and has now been formally removed from the high school.
Davenport police say a 15-year-old Davenport West High School student is facing charges after assaulting another student in the cafeteria.
In a statement released on Tuesday, police said at 10:59 a.m. on Monday, a school resource officer assigned to the high school responded to a disturbance inside the cafeteria.
Police say their investigation revealed one student assaulted another, resulting in serious injuries.
The 15-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with Assault Causing Serious Injury, a class D felony. He was cited and turned over to a parent.
A Davenport West High School student is recovering at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospitals after an assault left him severely injured, according to his mother.
The boy, who police and school officials have not identified, suffered a brain bleed during the assault over the lunch hour on Monday, his mother said. According to the victim’s mother her son had to undergo surgery and is currently responding to doctors.
Davenport Police and Davenport school officials would not provide details of the assault except to say it happened. The victim’s mother said she is told the assault was the result of a picture taken by her son.
In a video provided to TV6 of the assault by several viewers, and confirmed by the victim’s mother to be her son, another student can be seen punching the victim several times before throwing a chair at him. The video ends with another person attempting to restrain the person who threw the punches while the other student lays motionless on the ground. While TV6 has seen this video we have not obtained the proper permissions by the video's owner to release the video.
Davenport School officials said both students were released to their parents. The victim’s mother told TV6 she took her son to Genesis Hospitals where the brain bleed was found and then he was transported to Iowa City.
Police have not released the names of those involved and it is unclear if any charges will be filed.
Two Davenport West students were removed from the school Monday afternoon after an assault during the lunch hour.
According to Davenport Police, officers were called to West High School at 10:59 a.m. for a fight between two male students. A police sergeant could not provide names of the juveniles or tell TV6 if any charges were being filed.
Parents who reached out to TV6 said videos of the fight were circulating on social media but TV6 has not seen the videos and Davenport Police could not confirm they exist.
A Davenport Schools spokesperson said both students were released to their parents.
