Shooting victim identified as 45-year-old man from Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) - UPDATE 8/19: Officials have released the name of the man who died in a shooting over the weekend in Rock Island.

Officials say 45-year-old Michael D. McGee, of Rock Island, died as a result of a shooting. The preliminary cause of death is a traumatic gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen.

Those who knew McGee tell TV6 he was known as the guy "who looked out for and protected everyone." Friends tell TV6 he would mow others lawns, fix cars and watch kids for those who needed it.

McGee's son tells TV6 he would have been 46 tomorrow.

The investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE: The Rock Island Police Department is investigating the homicide of an adult male who was shot in the 600 block of 7th Street.

According to a release, the victim died at the homicide. Their identity has not been released.

Police are asking the public to come forward with any information.

ORIGINAL: Rock Island Police are investigating a possible shooting near downtown.

Witnesses tell TV6 that they heard multiple shots being fired near the area of 7th Avenue and 7th Street around 4:00 Sunday afternoon.
