Erwin King wins Hometown Hero Award
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - Erwin King was honored by Servpro and TV6 as the Hometown Hero for his service to children in the Quad Cities. King is the founder of Soles for Children, a non-profit providing shoes, hats, mittens, coats and haircuts to children in the Quad Cities.
“I see the smiles on their faces and know that I’m helping the parents not having to make a choice between putting a meal on the table and buying coats and shoes or paying a bill. They go to school and they don’t have to worry about getting teased or bullied and that helps a lot that really helps a lot to see it in their face when they’re so excited and they don’t have to worry about going to school and somebody saying something bad about them” said King.
“It was so obvious and so evident to me that he has a very kind heart and a very generous soul. He has risen out of his own adversity and did not look within himself he looked outside himself. He saw a need for children and he provided for that need and to me that’s what a Hometown Hero is all about. My hope in sharing Erwin’s story is that someone out there would be able to provide him a brick and mortar that would come alongside Erwin and provide him office space and storage space for all of his goods, to provide him office space so that he can broaden his horizons” said Sarah Joehlin who nominated King.
The Soles for Children 9th annual shoe and coat giveaway will be held on Sunday, September 22nd at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Rock Island.
