Accused drunk driver arrested for hit-and-run that killed high school baseball player

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB/Gray News) - A man was arrested after a hit-and-run that killed a 16-year-old baseball player.

The Alexandria Police Department arrested 45-year-old Julius Layfield on Wednesday. He faces several charges in the hit-and-run death of 16-year-old Collin Lacaze.

Alexandria Police Chief Chad Gremillion said Layfield is accused of drunk driving at the time of the hit-and-run.

On Tuesday, Collin and a 16-year-old girl were standing on the right shoulder of a road about 11 p.m. when a vehicle hit both of them and drove away.

Both were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Collin was later pronounced dead.

Collin was a junior at Alexandria Senior High School, where he also played baseball.
