Rock Island nonprofit gives books to more than 200 students
Organization aims to improve childhood literacy rates through book giveaway at Rock Island Academy
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) - A nonprofit gave out books to more than 200 students and their teachers Thursday at Rock Island Academy.
Each student was given three new books to take home, while teachers received classroom copies to encourage reading throughout the year.
“We hope by the time children enter third grade, having gotten additional books for the first three years they will have adopted behaviors in their reading that they are excited about reading that they have adopted reading behaviors that move them on through their future schooling years,” said Tamara Felden, president of Planting Books: Seeds 4 a Better Future. “You adopt a habit for three years that tends to stick with you.”
The nonprofit “Planting Books: Seeds 4 a Better Future” held the giveaway as part of an effort to improve literacy outcomes and strengthen family engagement while setting students up for future success.
