DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - A celebration was held to celebrate the winner of this year’s Dooley Scholarship.

Angela Chen, a Davenport North senior, was awarded the $20,000 scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually by the Davenport Community School District Scholarship Selection Committee, and the Quad Cities Community Foundation.

Chen says she’s relieved to be able to study what she loves without worrying about the cost of college.

“I’ve always loved biology specifically, and I love learning, and the eye especially is so fascinating to me,” Chen said. “I am so excited to have the opportunity to do more research and continue my education without worrying so much about the financial factor.”

The scholarship started in 1965 and was named after Dr. Thomas Dooley, a physician who ran medical clinics in the mountains of Vietnam and Laos. It can be used at any accredited college or university.
