Chicago man accused of delivering fentanyl to Davenport woman who overdosed
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - A Chicago man is charged in the death of a Davenport woman after police say he delivered her fentanyl and later ran from authorities when being arrested.
Martin L. Carpenter, 40, of Chicago, faces several charges including two counts of a controlled substance violation, a Class C Felony, involuntary manslaughter, a Class D Felony, and interference with officials acts with bodily injury, a Serious Misdemeanor.
On Jan. 18, police responded to the 900 block of Marquette Street in Davenport for a possible heroin overdose.
A woman was found suffering from an apparent overdose and was administered Narcan, which initially helped, according to police.
The woman was known as heroin user by detectives and had overdosed in the past, according to arrest affidavit.
Police said they found .60 grams of heroin in the woman’s possession that tested positive for fentanyl via a Detectachem field test.
The woman was taken to Iowa City for treatment but later died as a result of the overdose, according to police.
Police said surveillance video, digital evidence and witnesses of the events leading up to the woman’s death showed Martin’s direct involvement in delivering drugs to her.
According to police, Martin coordinated with the woman via texts and phone calls to set up the purchase of $160 worth of heroin.
Police said Martin and the woman met at around 3:10 p.m.
The woman returned to her home around 4:05 p.m. and the phone call stating she overdosed was placed at 4:42 p.m., according to police.
On Jan. 31, members of the Davenport Police Department Tactical Operations Bureau found Martin in front of Aldi Supermarket on Brady Street in Davenport and knew he had active warrants, according to arrest affidavit.
Detectives and a uniformed Iowa State Patrol Trooper approached Martin on foot to take him into custody but he fled on foot and disobeyed the detective’s commands to stop running, according to arrest affidavit.
Once taken into custody, detectives found multiple plastic bags of cocaine in Martin’s mouth, according to arrest affidavit.
Police say they also found a digital scale with cocaine residue, a bag of marijuana and $503 in cash in Martin’s possession.
Detectives and a trooper sustained minor injuries due to Martin fleeing on foot, according to arrest affidavit.
Martin is in Scott Co. Jail on a $25,000 cash only bond.
Martin secured a $10,000 bond on charges stemming from the incident on Jan. 31 when authorities arrested him.
A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 11 in Scott County.
