Muscatine’s Towhead Island dedicated to youth education and conservation
129-acre donated island will focus on engaging young people with nature
MUSCATINE, Iowa (KWQC) - Muscatine’s Community Foundation is dedicating the 129 acres of Towhead Island to youth in the area.
The island was donated to the city’s Community Foundation from the Joe W. and Betty L. Rauch Memorial Fund. Officials say they are working to build partnerships focused on conservation and engaging people with nature.
“For youth education, adult education, and conservation. It sits in the heart of our downtown and is such a key landmark for our community,” said Charla Schafer, president of the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine.
The foundation received a call from a donor a year ago with the wish that Towhead Island be maintained in perpetuity. The gift honors the legacy and ideals of the Rauches, who were stewards of Muscatine.
“Their engagement in the community and caring about every person as they are in lifelong education and work ethic were passed down as ideals, and this is a perfect alignment for that,” Schafer said.
Island history and conservation plans
The island has a rich history dating back to the 1830s, when officials say it was home to pioneer settlers. Loggers used to tie up their tows on the island, which is how it got the name Towhead Island.
