MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (CNN) - Waymo is pulling almost 4,000 of its robotaxis off the roads, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The vehicles’ self-driving software was not able to recognize construction zones and ramp closures.
Officials said there were several instances in San Francisco and Phoenix where the robotaxis drove into zones that were closed, posing a potential crash hazard.
According to NHTSA, all of the recalled vehicles have this technological glitch.
A spokesperson for Waymo said the company “identified an area of improvement regarding performance around freeway construction zones.”
