Proposed tax increases could impact wealthy in Illinois

SPRINGFEILD, Ill. (KWQC) - Illinois Democrats hope to tackle big budget challenges the next two years by raising taxes.

The $6 billion would go a long way to fix the budget woes but Republicans said it puts too much burden where it doesn’t belong.

If passed, new taxes would go on the wealthiest corporations and people in the state.

Supporters of the tax hikes said the state’s current tax system is unfair to low-income residents.

They said new taxes will support immigrant communities, health care access for all and provide direct cash assistance.
